Raising Teenage Boys

Hi Ed,

Happy belated birthday!  Hope all is well with you.  Are you still in PR?

I was thinking about you recently as I was going through some old video tape and found some footage of [your daughter] from when we visited your place at Incline.  She must be around 6 or 7 and so cute.  I'll get that to you when I finish the project.

We are all doing well, save for some feelings of incompetence raising two teenage boys!

Let me know if you are ever in The SF Bay Area so we can have you for dinner.

Take care,
Thank you for sending me your wishes.

Wants a Tribe in Philadelphia

Dear Mr Seykota

I hope this finds you well. I was re introduced to you (first time was reading Dr Schwagers books) and visited your site.

I would like to join a TTP group in you know if there is one?  If not, can I go about starting one?

Thanks for providing these insights for all to consume. I think you're absolutely right about the impact of hidden intentions and feelings on our lives. I can see how my own issues have impacted my trading and I would like to explore these things more deeply under the TTP framework.

Thanks again.
Yes, you may form your own Tribe.

Trading Bug

Mr Seykota,

I would like to thank you for this opportunity.

Being able to possibly correspond with a legendary trader is a true example of giving back to the trading community.

I was under the impression that the Trading Tribe was exclusive to its title.

But the Tribe is so much more. It shouldn't surprise me that something you created would be unconventional, creative and so relevant.

I am middle aged. I got the trading bug a little late but I think my experience and insight from this forum will certainly put me in the right direction. Thanks again.

Thank you for sharing your process.

Use of Name

Dear Ed,

As I read your answer to my post from July 10, 2016 (TT Format) I feel bewildered and surprised.

I would rather like to know what you prefer me to do, or how would you feel about me using you as a reference. In other words: I miss you as a subject of the answer. Furthermore, you do not mention a lot of things that I also may do: bake a cake, fish in Alaska, take a nap, greet you for your birthday and write an email to you with a winking eye.

Un gran abrazo!
I support you using my name as reference, not as a recommendation or endorsement of you,  your work, your products or services.

Thank you for raising the old bold trader issue.

I start to feel this might not be the best name for my firm. But I have already register it.

Investor might misunderstand my trading style is putting big position and gamble.

The boldness principle I want to follow has actually broader meaning, it comprises many aspects, e.g. the boldness to take the pain of realizing loss when a trade is not working, the boldness to jump in to a trend when it’s already 200 day’s high, the boldness to give back large open profit to sit tight on the trend as long as valid for system, and the boldness to accept the pain of missing a big opportunity by refusing putting on a big bet and stick to the risk manage rules, the boldness of doing nothing to stick to the system, or the boldness of not being bold.

When applying to life and relationship, it’s the boldness to apologize when find out I am wrong, and the boldness to willingly lose argument to gain the heart, the boldness to accept the loss to help somebody who will never pay me back, the boldness to take loss when there’s financial interest conflict with somebody I care, the boldness to be loyal to the spouse no matter how she whipsaws me, and the boldness to say no to the temptation for long term right livelihood.

It’s simply what we do in the tribe.

I feel a little self imposed trouble for I have to explain to client what I really mean. I want to see how it unfolds.

Thank you for sharing your process and insights.

Naked in London

Happy Birthday Ed –

I hope this email finds you well and you have many more to come.

How is [your daughter]? I would think she’s finished university and is building a life for herself.

Are you still in Puerto Rico? If so, is Zika as prevalent as the media reports or is it largely scare tactics?

I hope your trading/investing is going well.

I’m living in London – I do love this city, however I feel naked not being able to carry concealed – before I left the US I had a NH resident permit and a Virginia non-resident permit – those covered the vast majority of the country. I’m deciding whether to start my own company here (or in the US) or continue to be a mercenary for other firms. I’ll have the situation fleshed out within the next five months.

If you’re ever in London please let me know – it would be great to see you again. I’ll do the same if I’m ever in your neck of the woods.

There’s not a day that goes by that I’m not overwhelmingly grateful to you. Your acts of kindness, so many years ago, had a domino effect on my life – I live a great life and have lived in such beautiful places around the world – all because you extended your helping hand of friendship to me – it’s a debt I can never repay – thank you so much Ed.

Warm regards,
Thank you for sending me your wishes and an update on your situation.

Per Zika: I recall biting a few mosquitos to find out what happens to them - so far they still seem fine, maybe a little angry.

Greetings from China

Dear Ed,

It is just like yesterday when I first read Market Wizard in library in 1994. Life is so short, if God give you another 70 years you can do a lot of things and help more people, anyway, I wish you long live in this world and hope more people join your birthday party when you are 80. I want to say again.

Thanks for the Internet inventor that I am able to have the chance to encounter your website. Also, I want this ... to be your birthday present, please accept that. I hope you don't feel I measure present as money, I know you need nothing. Your FAQ is priceless for me. Your thought is clear, steady and no doubt that inspire me a lot in my trading and my life.

I have over two years not being able to connect your website because China government restrain most of the overseas's servers for their political need.

Sometimes [Name] download your FAQ to send to me. Your actual trading part in TT CHART helps me a lot, Thank you. (my trading result, 8% in 2015, 31% in 2016)

This two years I have some healthy problems (high blood pressure and heart problem), so my back testing process become very slow. Last year when you invite me and [Name] to your place for system developing, I am very happy and don't want to lose the opportunity. But I am hesitate for my healthy problem.

I am upset at that time and I am sorry for not answering you. Now I am little better, if you feel good and want to visit China, it is still welcome.

Thank you for the gift and for sending me your wishes.

Tribe Application - The Soul Mate Within

1. Progress this Year:

This past year I struggle with the issues surrounding my inability to have a mutually supportive and loving relationship with a woman.

I historically attract control-centric relationships in which the woman winds up invalidating me.

I give up several control-centric response patterns and begin employing the Heart Rock.

I read a lot of books on relationships, get on the hot seat several times and also consult privately with many friends - including many with solid marriages. Still, I don't quite seem to get it.

I also see how, as a child, I lock my feelings in a strongbox so that I don't accidentally express them and risk reprisals.

Then, a while ago, one of my friends and a Tribe member suggests that I might consider practicing having a good relationship with a soul mate - by having a good relationship with myself.

Thus, I might find the the path to the soul mate I seek by looking inside.

I do this and start treating myself better. I stop doing things to skimp and save and start doing things that I like to do. I start enjoying my own company.

Big surprise, this actually works!

Since then, I notice I now have both men and women in my life who care about me and who support me in growing stronger and in feeling good.

Huge change.  Thank you, Tribe.

2. Current Issues:

I would like to continue enjoying my life and sharing it with supportive and loving friends.

I would also like to continue with further automation of my trading system.

3. Agreements:

I agree to send a report to FAQ within one week and again within one month of the upcoming Tribe meeting.
Thank you for sending me your application and for complying with the requirements for participation.

Tribe Application - Clutter and Temper

Hi Ed,

(1)    I make progress this last year in removing clutter from my life. Clutter in terms of things that stand between me and getting what I want. There’s physical clutter, digital (email) clutter, emotional clutter. I notice an increase in connection with my family, friends, and wealth as clutter decreases in my life.

(2)    My current issues are blind spots that I am not sure what they even are. I notice that I seem to wear my feelings on my sleeves in that I am almost hyper sensitive. I notice that I get angry really fast and am quick to confront people, including those whom I love most. Usually I can stick with the feelings and receive a positive outcome. There are times, though, where I notice my feelings are really HOT and something seemingly small can really get me angry. I notice the strongest feelings come up when I perceive a lack of appreciation, and I acknowledge that I am in the control mode when this happens. I have a recent example involving my son’s shoe lace.

(3)    I agree to participate fully in the Tribe meeting, support others in their process, and report to FAQ after one week and after one month.

Thank you for sending me your application and for complying with the requirements for participation.

UK Tribes

Good morning,

Are there any tribes in UK?

Thank you for raising this issue.

Tribes, by design, appear, serve their function and then disappear into the fabric of the lives of the participants.

Tribes, by design, and unlike government agencies, do not have self-preservation  instincts.

Tribes, by design, operate more like egg shells. They serve as an interim container during a rapid growth process.

Occasionally, a Tribe registers with the Tribe Directory page.  Few of them subsequently de-list so the Tribe Directory generally contains stale listings.

Bold Move

Hi Chief,

I register my CTA business as “Boldness Technologies LLC”.

I like the quote, “Boldness has genius, magic and power in it.”

For successful trading and relationships, I need some boldness, also need technologies to follow the trend and manage risks. That’s my understanding for now. |-)

I need more hot seat to work on my boldness.

Or simply put, to have the boldness to follow the trend, and have the technologies to manage risks.

Thank you for sharing your process.

You can find lots of  bold traders.  You can find lots of old traders.  You can't find many old bold traders.

Drumming Up a Tribe

Hi Ed,

We are now three in our new Portland Tribe and counting.

If any Tribe members from another city happen to be visiting Portland this summer or fall we would enjoy meeting them and if it worked out for all involved perhaps even an initial Tribe meeting.

An experienced Tribe member willing to provide us with some early guidance would be more than welcome.

It's time I think to make a visit to the local drum store.

Thank you for sharing your process and your flow chart.

Sailing in a Foreign Language
Hi Ed,

Happy Birthday.

I crew on a boat racing around long island last weekend.  The conditions range from very stiff breeze to near doldrums.  Aside from me the crew is entirely Russian and close to 100% of the talk in a language I don't speak.  This sets the stage for all sorts of new 'stuff' to emerge and I experience pretty massive feelings volatility.

It's days passed and I still am assimilating it all.  The big one was my deep frustration with headings and the ability of the crew to keep on course.  I mire my self in thinking I can do so much better, and that they are unaware of how critical driving a straight line is.  And I go pretty deep here.  Now that I reflect on it I think this serves nothing, and that the source of frustration likely stems from my own lack of defined way points.  I'm a bit adrift in things right now, not really sure where to go or what to do.

I also experience the joy of building relationships using glances, eye contact and teamwork as the primary medium of communication, and the feeling of accomplishment in the finish.

At one point I wanted to jump off the boat, now I am just grateful to have the opportunity to experience all that in a compressed time frame.

Thank you for sharing your process and your awareness.

You might consider taking your feelings of <frustration>, <joy> and <gratitude> to Tribe as  entry points.

Austin Tribe Application -
Putting it Off and Taking it Off

Dear Ed,

This is my re-application for the Austin Trading Tribe for Aug 6th, 2016

My TT experience is over a year with the Sacramento CA Trading Tribe.  I participate in multiple hot seats (including one lead by you in San Francisco) and assist other Tribe members with their issues/hot seats.  I recall a history of reporting my progress and interpretations of Tribe Meetings to FAQs.

I recall the intensity of feelings while being on the hot seat and how it can be transformational for Tribe members present and those reading FAQs.  I recall the difficulty I experience relating those feelings with inadequate words.  I am willing to commit to sending a report to FAQs after one week and again in one month after attending the Austin Tribe meeting.
My current and long standing issues are procrastination, feelings of inadequacy, feeling overwhelmed, trying to take care of everyone else except myself.

1. Health:  I need to lose weight as at high risk for a fatty liver and cancer due to embarrassing morbid obesity.  My specific measurable goals are  90# of fat loss over a years time plus tone muscles particularly stomach (decrease 8 inches) and upper arms decrease (2 inches each), increase flexibility by being able to touch my head to my knee while sitting on the floor.  This is an area I am embarrassed to admit I am a health professional who is not loving herself enough to care for my body by exercising and do the work to get to my goal.  I have periodic feelings of inadequacy, stress, sadness that I stuff by stuffing myself.  I repeat the pattern of starting with good intentions, making progress and get to a specific weight where I become excessively nervous about being below. And then rebound back up.

2.  Romantic:  I desire a communicative, honest, intelligent romantic partner.  I desire a loving, supportive relationship.  But I feel my weight is preventing anyone from physically and emotionally getting close to me.

3.  Financial: I am in better situation than last year.  I have debts to government institutions I need to pay off before I can retire.  I feel very unstable financially.

I am not currently in a Trading Tribe.

Progress made this last year is:
1. Move to [City] in Nov 2015
2. Increase my income by 50%.
3. Increase activity in my artistic talents.
4. Stabilize my living situation.
5. Help my father make his home safer allowing him to continue to live at home at age 91.  Develop a more loving relationship with my father.
6. Build a wheelchair ramp for my mother so she can get in and out of her home without climbing steep steps (decreasing her pain experienced daily) Spend 10 days with her on relocation trip to Austin.
7. Begin to date again and actively looking to develop a close romantic relationship.
8. Continue to eat 85% to 100% vegetarian daily.

Thank you Ed for helping me identify my focus for the coming year by  extending the invitation to apply.

Thank you for sending me your application and for meeting the requirements for participation.

Austin Tribe Meeting Application -
Family Matters

I am applying to attend the trading tribe in Saturday.

1.  This last year is a learning experience.  I re-experience many issues from my childhood as I return to my hometown to assist the "family business".  I piece together emotional pieces I block out as a child and pay a price to get re-educated into the "games people play".  I feel exhilarated and positive about the ways the businesses have made a turn around.  I feel frustration and anger as I interact with my father and sister who are both addicted to opiates.  I become acutely aware of being in an emotional prison my entire life...a slave of sorts.  I'm making plans to be free of this drama permanently.
2.  My current issues are feelings of anxiety, fear and uncertainty as I plan to transition into the investment community.  I medicate with food fairly consistently and I want to reverse that pattern and drop 50-60lbs by the 1st of the year.
3.  I agree to post to FAQ after 1 week and after 1 month.

Thank you for sending me your application and for meeting the requirements for participation.

Austin Tribe Meeting Application -
Skinny and Sober

Dear Ed,

I want to wish you a Happy 70th Birthday.  I hope to attend the Trading Meeting on August 6th and your Birthday party on the 7th.   I attended a workshop plus I believe right at 6 Tribe meetings.  I sat on the hot seat at least twice, but I think I did more than that.

My progress has been slower without a Tribe to attend, however I have come to deal with some of my emotional issues. I have a much better understanding and appreciation how my emotion drives my life and thinking.

My food addiction seriously slowed my progress in all areas of my life. I became nearly disabled in summer 2014 due to hip and back issues caused by my weight.  When I decided to have the weight loss surgery, I spent a year dealing with the emotional upheaval of giving up my food addiction.  Finally, the surgery happened on July 5th.

I believe that this decision for the surgery along with my getting sober became one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life.

My efforts to start a Trading Tribe have met with no success.  My lack of work as a Process Manager feels insufficient for running a tribe.  I hope to try again very soon.  I have two people who show interest in forming a tribe with me and learning the TTP.  I hope that with this Tribe meeting I will be refreshed on the processes, so we can move forward with starting a tribe.

The issues I wish to address at TT include my lack of confidence in general and especially in myself when it comes raising funds to trade, feeling worthy of success especially financial, and basing my opinion of myself on what others think of me.  I grew up with a loving but very distant Father whose opinion decided the direction of our family without question.

I have a gut feeling that this impacted my emotional constraints on the issues that I wish to address. I am particularly concerned about reaching the goal of wanting to experience my emotions instead of allowing them to run the show.

I will follow up on my Trading Tribe experience by sending a report to FAQ after one week and one month.  I realize how valuable following up is after my last exit from the Austin Tribe. I hope to see you soon.

Thank you for sending me your application and for meeting the requirements for participation.

Tribe Application

Dear Ed,

I want to participate in the upcoming Tribe meeting.  My personal growth in the past year has been consistent and continuous, and I want to bring that growth to Tribe, both to share the benefits with my fellow Tribe members and to do further work on the issues I confront at this time.

In the past year I have attended three Holotropic Breathwork sessions, a Tribe meeting, a week-long personal growth retreat, and written to FAQ as well as reading the contributions of others.  I continue to address professional issues related to a transition away from the office psychotherapy practice I have maintained for the past forty years, along with initiating a major re-orientation in the way in which I want to serve others.

On the personal level, I want to continue to develop my ability to engage in emotionally mature and mutually satisfying relationships, instead of spending my precious time pursuing people who don't really want to engage on a deeper level with me.  I have resolved some deep conflicts within myself that have led me to remain too long in relationships that give me much less than they cost.

I commit to showing up with my whole heart open to the Tribe and to speaking my truth as honestly as I can.
Thank you for sending me your application and for meeting the requirements for participation.

Fully Automatic

Dear Ed:
I post the following quote:

“Systems trading is ultimately discretionary. The manager still has to decide how much risk to accept, which markets to play, and how aggressively to increase and decrease the trading base as a function of equity change. These decisions are quite important – often more important than trade timing. “

–Ed Seykota in Market Wizards: Interviews with Top Traders By Jack D. Schwager

Someone replies:

“Yes and no. Modern systems factor in these elements and remove all discretion thus allowing them to market a fully systemized model.”

I reply:

“What Seykota said then still holds true today. You'll see...”

I wonder what you believe, today?
Thank you for raising this issue.

So a client goes on line to use the fully automatic system.  He merely presses the start button and the money starts rolling in. Fully automatic.l

No one has to worry about any of those messy personal details such as his age, marital status, net worth, risk proclivity, or retirement plan. The program figures it all out, automatically.

No one has to choose a portfolio out of all the stocks, bonds, options and futures that appear on exchanges around the world - and no one has to bother thinking about the appearance of new instruments or the disappearance of old ones.

Just press [start] and let it all happen, automatically.

Fully Automatic Systems
remove all discretion.

Of course,
some people might claim
the act of pressing a button
involves some discretion.
